If you have a Shih Tzu you know just how difficult it can be to get them housebroken. They are super cute, but they can also be super stubborn. One way to help is using puppy pads, but what are the best puppy pads for Shih Tzus? Read on to learn about the top pads out there.

The Best Puppy Pads for Shih Tzus

Whether you have a Shih Tzu puppy or even an older dog, puppy pads can really save the day.

For puppies, a puppy pad can help you train your stubborn Shih Tzu.

For older dogs, they can help out when your dog no longer can hold their bladder as they did when they were younger.

For example, my Sammy is 13 and a half years old. She is dealing with diabetes and has a hard time getting through the night without having to pee.

I used to get up in the middle of the night to take her out, but now I have a dedicated area where I keep a pad for it and if she needs to go she can use that and she does.

It has been a lifesaver.

Of course, if you have a puppy or are considering getting one, the pads will help housebreak your Shih Tzu which is no small miracle.

So, let’s take a look at the top puppy pads regardless of the reason you plan on using them.

Features You Should Look For:

  • Size – you want a pad that will be big enough. Even though your puppy might be small, you want to give them a lot of room so they don’t accidentally hit the floor.
  • Absorbency – the pad needs to absorb enough of the liquid to keep it from running all over the place
  • Price – you are going to be using a lot of these, so you don’t want to have to pay too much.

So, let’s take a look at some of the best puppy pads for Shih Tzus.

1. TOP PICK: American Kennel Club Pet Training and Puppy Pads

Features:

  • Suitable for all puppies and senior pets
  • 17 Layer Composition with Quick-drying gel to provide immediate absorption
  • Non-skid plastic backing layer to prevent tracking and leaking

This is the pad I use. It comes in the following sizes:

  • 22″ x 22″ – 50 pack
  • 22″ x 22″ – 100 pack
  • 30″ x 28″ – 50 pack

I buy the 30″ x 28″ to have a larger coverage area. It gives my Shih Tzu plenty of room to get the job done without having to worry about liquid flooding over the edges onto the floor.

She has been using them for about 6 months now and they have worked out really well.

They are large enough that my Shih Tzu can use them more than once without having to step in a wet area.

Not to mention, she took to them very easily.

There was no fight to get her to use them.

What I Like About Them:

  • The size
  • No messes
  • Easy to put down and pick up to throw away
  • No leaking

What I Don’t Like About Them:

  • They don’t reduce odor.

2. Glad for Pets Black Charcoal Puppy Pads

Features:

  • Made with 5 layers
  • Polymer layer absorbs liquid and turns into a gel for easy clean-up
  • Can be used for new puppies or senior dogs
  • Developed with pheromone attractant so your dog knows where to go
  • 23″ x 23″
  • Holds 3 cups of urine

I tried a lot of pads before I decided on the one that was best for my dog.

This was one of the best that I used.

I didn’t have any issues with it and it did the job.

What I really liked about it was that it reduced odor.

It’s the one big advantage it has over my number one pick.

What I Like About Them:

  • Odor reduction
  • Leads your puppy right to the pad
  • Reduces accidents

What I Didn’t Like About Them:

  • Smaller than I wanted
  • Didn’t hold as much urine as it claims

3. OUT! Ultimate Quilted Puppy Pads

Features:

  • Pro-Grip technology to help reduce messes from slipping and bunching
  • Contains a moisture lock core
  • Made with a tear-resistant diamond quilted top sheet
  • Has a fresh scent to help control odor
  • 21″ x 21″

This is a great puppy pad as well.

It really does help with odor and I liked that it laid flat and didn’t move around a lot.

If you’ve ever accidentally stepped on a wet puppy pad you know that it flies right out from under your feet and down you will go.

Trust me…

I did it once.

It wasn’t pretty.

These are pretty small, so unless your Shih Tzu is really small you might have leak issues.

Your pup will need to aim for the middle of the pad.

If they go near the edge, it can spill over.

Although that’s true of any pad.

What is great is the price.

You can give them a try without spending a lot of money and see if they work for you.

What I Like About Them:

  • It stays in place
  • The price

What I Don’t Like About Them:

  • They are a bit small
  • If your puppy doesn’t go in the middle of the pad you can have leaks.

4. IMMCUTE Dog Pee Pads Extra Large 28″x34″

Features:

  • 6-layer protection design
  • Flash-dry technology quickly turns liquid into gel
  • Plastic backing and border
  • 28″ x 34″

I know you have a small dog, but don’t make the mistake that having a small pup means you need a small pad.

You will quickly find that the large the better.

Also, having the border does help with leaks.

It doesn’t mean that the pad will always catch everything, but it does help.

If your pup pees right on the edge, then the border won’t help, but they go on the white part of the pad then the border makes a big difference.

The backing also helps with reducing leaks.

Because of the size, they work well if you have more than one dog and/or if you are gone all day for work.

Your pup can go on them more than once.

What I Like About Them:

  • The size
  • The edging and backing
  • The price

What I Don’t Like About Them:

  • If you pick up the pad right after your pup pees, it can run off

5. ASPCA AS62930 Dog Training Pads

Features:

  • 6 layer composition
  • Quick-drying gel to provide immediate absorption
  • Fresh scent & odor eliminating
  • 22″ x 22″

These are nice pads.

I like that they are from the ASPCA.

They come in a nice 100 pack and trust me once you start using them you’ll be glad you have a good amount on hand.

I wish that they were a little bigger, but they aren’t a bad size.

Just plan on putting down a new one more often than you would with the larger sizes.

What I Like About Them:

  • You can pick from several scents –  Fresh, Citrus or Mountain
  • They have a good-sized border
  • That they are from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

What I Don’t Like About Them:

  • They are a little thinner than some other brands

To Sum it All Up:

In some ways, puppy pads are puppy pads. They all work to some extent. Even so, if you are having to use several of them a day, you want to take price into consideration more than if you are only using one a day.

Size should also be a consideration. If you try a smaller size and it doesn’t work for you, don’t get too upset. Just go a size bigger until you find the right one for your little cutie.

Housebreaking Shih Tzus can be difficult, but you will get there and these pads can make the journey much easier for you and your pup.
