We all like a sweet treat now and then and fruit fits the bill very nicely. Your Shih Tzu is no different. They like sweets as well and enjoy having a bit of fruit, but before you let your pup indulge you need to know what fruits can a Shih Tzu eat.

Fruits That Are Harmful to Your Shih Tzu

There are a number of fruits that you shouldn’t feed your Shih Tzu as they can make your dog sick or even be fatal.

Here are some of the most common types of fruits you should never feed your Shih Tzu.

Avocados, Grapes, Raisins

Avocados, grapes, and raisins are all dangerous for Shih Tzus.

All parts of avocado are bad for a dog. This includes the bark, seeds, fruit, and leaves. All of them contain persin which can cause your Shih Tzu to vomit and have diarrhea.

According to the American Kennel Club, “Persin is present in the avocado fruit, pits, leaves, and the actual plant, so all of these parts are potentially poisonous to your dog. Most of the persin is concentrated in the leaves, and the skin and pit of the fruit. It is also present in avocado flesh in small amounts.”

Also, grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure

Seeds or Pits  From Any Fruit

Cherries

While cherries aren’t bad for a dog in general, the cherry pit is highly toxic. All it takes is one for your Shih Tzu to become ill and have digestive issues.

A few more and it can actually be fatal. It is best to avoid cherries altogether, so you don’t have to worry about your pet getting the pit.

Apple and Pear Seed

Both apples and pears are fine to give to your Shih Tzu, but you will need to cut them up into small chunks.

You will also need to make sure that there are no seeds in the bites you give your dogs.

Both apple and pear seeds are toxic for dogs.

Fruit Pits

There are a number of fruits that come with a pit. While the fruits themselves are fine to give as a treat, the pits contain cyanogenic glycosides which can be toxic.

According to Hanie Elfenbein, DVM, “Cyanide toxicity can be deadly in only a few minutes. If only a small amount is consumed, signs of cyanide toxicity include salivation, rapid or difficulty breathing, and even convulsions and paralysis.”

So, you should avoid giving your Shih Tzu the pit from any of the following fruits:

  • Plums
  • Peaches
  • Apricots
  • Mangos
  • Cherrys

Grapefruit

You can give your Shit Tzu a piece of grapefruit but only in extreme moderation. Too much will cause stomach upset.

Fruits You Can Feed Your Shih Tzu

There are a whole host of fruits you can give your Shih Tzu as an occasional treat. These fruits will provide health benefits and your favorite pup will love having them.

Like in all things, moderation is key. So, don’t overdo these treats or you may find that your Shit Tzu has loose stools or even stomach upset.

Berries

All berries are good options for Shih Tzus. They enjoy them and their small size makes them easy for them to eat.

Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and they are just as good for your pet as they are for you.

Other berries you can feed your Shih Tzu include:

  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Cranberries
  • Blackberries

As Shih Tzus age, they can get urinary tract infections just like humans, and cranberries can be a way to keep that from happening. Of course, if you think your dog has an infection you should see your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Both the dried and fresh types of cranberries are okay, but again, moderation is important as too many can lead to an upset stomach for your pup.

Apples and Pears

Both apples and pears can be given to your Shih Tzu as long as you remove all the seeds.

As mentioned before, the seeds can be toxic, so don’t give a whole or even half of an apple or pear. Instead, cut the fruit into small bite-sized pieces and check for seeds before you give your dog the treat.

Not to mention apples can reduce the number of bacteria on your Shit Tzu’s teeth.

Peaches

Peaches are a good option for a treat. You can use either fresh or canned. Again, just be sure your dog doesn’t get the pit.

Peaches will provide vitamin A and are a good source of fiber for your Shih Tzu.

Melons

All types of melons are enjoyed and a proper treat for Shih Tzus.

Just like with apples and pears, be sure to take the seeds out first and bite-sized chunks are the best option.

You can give your dog:

  • Watermelon
  • Cantaloupe
  • Honeydew

Other Fruits Your Shih Tzu Might Enjoy

There are some additional and less common fruits that you can give your Shih Tzu and they should enjoy them as well.

These include:

  • Pineapple
  • Kiwi
  • Mango
  • Oranges

If your dog has a habit of eating its own poop, pineapples will change the taste of it and your dog will be less likely to do so.
