I have to admit, I’ve always preferred my peaches out of a can in heavy syrup over fresh off the tree, and while the fresh variety is a great treat for dogs, my beloved canned peaches, not so much. So, if you have some of the fresh kind, and you enjoy them, you might feel the urge to share them with your furry friend. But can Shih Tzus eat peaches?

Can Shih Tzus Eat Peaches

In general, yes, Shih Tzus can eat peaches, but that’s not the whole story.

Parts of the peach can be dangerous for your little pup.

So, before you decide to indulge your little guy, make sure you know which parts of the peach are okay and which aren’t.

The Flesh of the Peach

The meaty part of the peach, the part you eat, is fine for Shih Tzus.

It has a lot of vitamin A and fiber.

While dogs don’t actually need to eat fruit, they do enjoy it.

Just keep in mind that their digestive system works differently than yours does.

Too much of a good thing can lead to unwanted consequences such as abdominal pain, upset stomach, and diarrhea.

What About Canned Peaches?

So, what about those yummy canned peaches?

It is best not to feed your Shih Tzu canned peaches.

The sugar content is off the chart and too much sugar can lead to an upset stomach and diarrhea.

The extra carbs can also cause weight gain and that will lead to all sorts of health issues.

The bottom line is if you want to give your Shih Tzu a peach, make it a fresh one.

Organic Is Better

You should consider buying organic fruit and veggies as most commercial produce is treated with pesticides.

These aren’t great for you, but they are even worse for your little Shih Tzu.

And they can even be toxic.

Regardless of what peaches you buy, be sure to wash them well before you give them to your dog.

Peach Pits are a Big No-No

You should never give your dog a whole peach or the peach pit.

The pit, or stone, of the peach, contains cyanide and if your Shih Tzu eats it they can get cyanide poisoning.

If a piece of the pit breaks off and they swallow it, this can lead to choking or an intestinal blockage. And that can be fatal if left untreated.

In addition, the surface of the pit is abrasive and if swallowed can do a real number on your Shih Tzu’s small intestine.

Not to mention, peach pits are really hard. If your Shih Tzu tries to chew it, they may break a tooth or even damage their jaw.

Peach Stems and Leaves

If you happen to have a peach tree in your yard, do keep your Shih Tzu far from it.

Peach stems and leaves are also toxic for your dog as they also contain cyanide.

If a peach falls from the tree onto the ground, your Shih Tzu might decide to have a snack and try to eat the whole thing.

Be sure to pick up any peaches that may have fallen and don’t leave them around as a temptation for your dog.

Even if you happen to go and pick peaches at a farm, be sure to remove all leaves and stems before giving your pup the sweet treat.

Frozen Peach Treats

A frozen slice of peach can be a great treat when it is hot out, but keep in mind that Shih Tzus don’t have the best teeth.

If your Shih Tzu is older and has missing teeth or bad teeth, you may not want to give them this human food.

Of course, if you have a puppy that is teething, then a frozen slice of peach might be just the ticket to make them feel a little better.

Health Benefits of Peaches

As mentioned before, peaches have a lot of vitamin A as well as fiber.

They also contain vitamin C, E, and antioxidants.

They also are low in calories, so you don’t have to worry about your Shih Tzu gaining weight if they have a slice now and then.

Peaches also have some good minerals in them such as magnesium, potassium, and copper.

Don’t Over Do the Peaches

Be sure to make peaches an occasional treat. Even if you give your Shih Tzu fresh peaches they still have a lot of natural sugars.

If your dog is diabetic but sure to ask your vet if they can have them before you give them a slice.

You don’t want to elevate their blood sugar levels.

Most commercial dog foods have the correct balance of nutrients, so you should always go with the 90/10 rule when giving your Shih Tzu treats.

That is 90 percent of their daily calories should come from their food and up to 10 percent can come from their treats.

This will allow aid in good digestive health.

And while peaches are a good source of fiber and a delicious treat for dogs, too many high sugar treats will lead to stomach upset and weight gain.

To Sum it All Up:

A fresh peach can be a sweet treat for your Shih Tzu, but as pet parents, it is your job to ensure you don’t give too much of this tasty treat to your furry friend. Even though a peach can be a healthy snack, little goes a long way. Just be sure to keep the peach stone far away from your pet.
