The Benefits of Pineapple

A nice slice of pineapple on hot summer days is the best.

It tastes great and contains minerals including manganese, calcium, copper, iron, and phosphorus.

It is also a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, niacin, riboflavin, and thiamin.

All of which is good for your Shih Tzu’s digestive and immune systems.

Issues to Watch For

While pineapple is a healthy fruit and a tasty treat for your Shih Tzu, there are some downsides to it as well.

Pineapple has a high sugar content and can increase your Shih Tzu’s blood sugar levels.

So, be careful if your dog has diabetes.

Even if they don’t, all that sugar can do a number on your dog’s stomach.

Too much sugar can lead to stomach upset and even vomiting or diarrhea.

Some Shih Tzus do have food allergies, so if yours does, be sure to ask your vet if pineapple is a good treat.

Not to mention, too much sugar can lead to weight gain.

The Rind and the Core

You should never feed your Shih Tzu the rind or the core of a pineapple.

They can be a choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage.

Both of which can be fatal.

So, make sure you only feed your Shih Tzu the flesh of the pineapple.

They tend to contain preservatives and even extra sugar as if pineapple needed extra sugar!

Fresh pineapple is always best for your pooch just as it is for you.

How to Feed Your Shih Tzu Fresh Pineapple

If you want your Shih Tzu to get some of the health benefits of pineapple, then you’ll want to cut it up into small pieces that are the right size for their tiny teeth.

Even though this is a healthy treat, keep a careful eye on your dog to make sure that its digestive system can handle pineapple.

It is best if you make this an occasional treat due to all the natural sugar it contains.

In fact, all human foods should be a once in a while treat and not a daily treat.

Your Shih Tzu will get all of their nutrients from their commercial dog food and you don’t want them overeating on treats.

To Sum it Up:

Raw pineapple is a great treat for dogs, but just be careful as the levels of sugar are high in this healthy fruit. Moderation is key with any fresh fruits and that’s true of pineapple as well. Pineapple can be part of a healthy diet as long as your Shih Tzu’s little tummy can handle it.
