If you’ve had a Shih Tzu for very long, chances are you know that they are prone to skin issues. From dry skin to yeast problems and everything in between, keeping your Shih Tzus skin in good shape can be difficult, so you might be wondering can you put lotion on a Shih Tzu? And why would you want to? Here’s what you need to know.

Can You Put Lotion on a Shih Tzu?

First off, you need to know that you shouldn’t use human lotion on your Shih Tzu.

That’s due to the fact that some of the chemicals used in these lotions are toxic for dogs.

And dogs can easily lick the lotion off and ingest it.

So, what can you do if your Shih Tzu is suffering from dry skin?

Here are your options…

1. Take Them to the Vet

Before you decide to use a doggy lotion go ahead and take your Shih Tzu to the vet to help determine if there are any underlying health issues that are causing the dry skin.

They could have an infection or a food allergy.

There could also be something in your dog’s environment that they are allergic to or they could even have seasonal allergies.

My Shih Tzu, Truman, has always had issues with yeast.

You can’t see it, but it does irritate his skin and you can smell it.

It reminds me of cheese popcorn.

So, talk to your vet to determine if there is a medical condition that needs to be addressed.

Once you’ve crossed that off your list, you can consider topical products such as lotion to help with the issue.

2. Try a Topical Lotion

Maybe you just live in the part of the country that gets really dry in the winter.

I know here in Illinois it can be a problem.

Or you live in Arizona which is pretty dry all year round.

Just like your skin can get dry, your Shih Tzus can as well.

Lotions that are made specifically for dogs can help.

But you don’t want to go slathering on a bunch of lotion at the first sign of dry skin.

You will need to test the lotion on a small area to see how your dog’s skin and your dog, in general, reacts to it.

If there are no negative reactions to the lotion, you can increase the amount you use.

In addition, you want to be sure you use a lotion that has no perfumes and organic is the best option.

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is all the rage for humans.

From putting it in your coffee to using it as a moisturizer, the uses seem to be endless.

But, it is good for your Shih Tzu?

Some vets feel it can help with all sorts of health issues your dog may have, but how do you use it?

You’ve got a couple of choices, you can give it to your dog orally or apply it topically.

Either way, you need to start with small amounts of coconut oil and then build up over time as long as your dog is tolerating it well.

Your vet can tell you how much you should start with if you are feeding it to your dog.

Just keep in mind, it can lead to diarrhea, but that typically only happens if you are giving your Shih Tzu too much.

Also, too much coconut oil ingested orally can lead to weight gain, so a little goes a long way, and if your Shih Tzu has any health issues it is important to talk to your vet before giving them any.

If you plan to apply it to your dog’s skin, do so no more than once a week.

Go ahead and apply it to the skin and let it sit for around 5 minutes then rinse it off.

Just don’t put too much on or your dog will be greasy.

If that is the case, you can give them a quick bath in warm water.

Signs That Your Shih Tzu is Suffering From Dry Skin

If you’re wondering whether or not your dog is dealing with dry skin, there are some easy signs to look for.

Oftentimes you will see your Shih Tzu licking a specific area or scratching or even chewing on themselves.

All of these can be signs of dry skin, but they can also be signs of other issues such as flea infestation.

So, take a really close look at your Shih Tzu to determine if you can see another cause.

If there are no fleas and you can see dry skin, then lotion can help make your Shih Tzu more comfortable.
