Everywhere you turn there is another Shih Tzu. From dogs in the park to dogs in strollers, Shih Tzus are everywhere. So, why does everyone have a Shih Tzu? There are plenty of reasons these little dogs are so popular. Here are some of the most common.
Why Does Everyone Have a Shih Tzu
Some people say that everyone has a Shih Tzu because they’re the perfect little lap dog.
They are small enough to fit in just about anywhere but big enough not to break when they hop up on your lap.
Others say that people have them because of their super cute looks: big, round eyes, hair flopping down over their faces, and tails standing straight up like a flagpole.
The answer is probably a combination of all those things plus a whole bunch of other things.
The Best Things About Shih Tzus
1. Their Size
Shih Tzus are the perfect lap dogs.
They are small enough to sit comfortably in your arms, but not so small that you’re going to sit on them or step on them when you’re walking.
The perfect size makes them ideal for long car rides, where you don’t have to worry about them taking up too much space and also makes it easier for you to see the road.
When I take my Shih Tzus on the road with me, I just put their bed in the backseat and they sleep comfortably during the whole trip.
They are big enough that you can take them on a walk but small enough they can share the bed with you.

2. They are Great Looking
Shih Tzus are show stoppers for sure. They like to strut to show their stuff and they’ve got plenty of stuff to show.
From their sassy top knot to their long silky hair they certainly stand out.
Yes, it takes some work to keep these little pooches looking their best, but it is worth it.
3. They are Friendly Dogs
Another reason that everyone has a Shih Tzu is that they are friendly dogs.
They love attention and cuddling and want to be involved in whatever you’re doing.
Their funny faces make them more fun to play with, too.
In most cases, Shih Tzus are good with other pets and children.
They like almost everyone, but they are one-person dogs, so while they like everyone, they only love you.

4. They Are Affectionate
Shih Tzus are very affectionate.
They will try to get their owners’ attention by nuzzling their hands or pawing at them gently.
They want to be with you most of the time and they do love to cuddle.
Whether your pooch is sitting on your lap, sleeping on your feet, or cuddling up with you in your bed, your Shih Tzu is going to be your constant companion.
5. They are Sweet
Shih Tzus have big, round eyes, so big that you’ll want to reach out and touch them.
Their little pink tongues hang from the side of their mouths as they stand on their hind legs trying to get your attention or beg for something that they want.
They do truly have very sweet faces.
It can be difficult to not give them a treat when their big eyes are asking for one.

6. They Don’t Shed Much
One of the best things about Shih Tzus is that they don’t shed a lot.
It’s not fun to pick dog hair out of your food when you’re eating, and it’s even harder to clean off your clothes.
If you live with dogs that shed then you will soon appreciate the fact that Shih Tzus don’t shed.
They have hair and not fur which is partly why they don’t really shed. Also, they have an undercoat that traps the hair so it doesn’t fall out on the floor or on you.
You won’t see it until you brush them.

7. Shih Tzus are Loyal
Shih Tzus are brave and strong, yet gentle and kind.
They will stand up to bigger dogs and protect their family but are still sweet enough to make you want to melt.
A Shih Tzu’s owner always comes first in their little hearts.
They will protect you – as much as their small size allows – and be there for you whenever you need them.
They’re usually quiet except for when they bark at strangers or other dogs passing by. Then they want to protect you.
Shih Tzu Tips for First Time Owners
If you just got a new Shih Tzu puppy or one of the older ones that were neglected by its previous family (it happens), start bathing it immediately.
They won’t like it at first, but they’ll get used to it.
Proper grooming will help keep your Shih Tzu clean and smelling good as well as healthy.
Keeping your Shih Tzu well-groomed is of utmost importance. Otherwise, their hair will get matted which can cause them pain and skin irritation.
Plan on taking them to the groomer every 4 to 6 weeks.
